England squad for World Championships announced

21/12/04 - The England squad for the World Championship qualifiers in January was announced today. It includes three ex-Docklands players, Danny Weemes, Efe Eruero and Alex Porter, but current captain Andy Vincett just missed out on a place. Docklands and England Head Coach Ian Legrand said, "We are looking forward to the opportunity. Selection has been difficult and time consuming".

Alex Bialokoz (Captain), Mark Brown, Efe Eruero, Steve Fee, Matt Jones, Ben Pipes, Alex Porter, Stephen Roper, Andrzej Saller, Andy Sinclair, Tom Stevens, Danny Weemes.

Christmas party shocker

15/12/04 - The biggest shock of this year's Christmas party was that it passed without any major incidents or scrapes. Sounds boring but a jolly time was had by all.

Thanks must go to Alessandro for arranging the table and more importantly the free beer. Martin Blake should also get a mention but it's not really worth it.

Postcard from the US - No 2

24/11/04 - Thanks to ex-Docklands player Alex Porter (currently playing in Austria) we have our second postcard from the US. However, this time it is a message from Yassir Sliti who is at Long Beach University:

Porter,
I hear that your in Austria...well....'guday myte'
how are things going over there? are you in a good team and legue?
just wanted to drop you a note and say good luck. speak to you soon.
yass

Clearly, Geography is not a priority subject in Peckham.

Postscript: Acting in his brother's defence Mohammed Sliti claims that this is in homage to a scene from Dumb & Dumber. Rumours that this film was based on episodes from Yassir's early life in Peckham and then transferred to the States are so far unfounded.

Postcard from the US

15/11/04 - Docklands' German star Albrecht Glitz, who is spending a year in Berkeley, has sent the following message to his fans:

How are you all doing? Congrats on the victory over Ashcombe - although I wasn't too worried. Somehow I have my doubts about the originality of Jesse's statements in the article though... two sentences and not one dirty insinuation... must have been ghostwriter Hopper.

As our season only starts in January, there is not too much news from my team here. We had our first preparation tournament last weekend which was good fun. Still a lot to improve though. If you wanna get to know my teammates check out our cool website (click on Al below).

Ah, and many thanks to all of you for the nice comments (especially those which indicate your happiness about my absence and the hope that my stay here will last indefinitely...thanks!) and the entertaining posing for Marietta's card! I love it getting changed while all of you guys stare at
me. And watching Vince stretching his thigh makes me really hot too. Thank god you didn't expose your bo??ocks to Marietta the way you always do when I watch you stretch.

In any case, hope you all have a good time in London, and I look forward to meeting you in January. By the way, are you, Blakey and Vince, now living alone? Where is my couch then?

Take it easy, see you,

Al

Legrand breaks the 200 game mark

30/10/04 - Docklands coach Ian Legrand has been honoured by the club after reaching the 200 game mark. He actually (unknownly) reached the landmark in the final match of last season. However, some extensive research over the summer highlighted that Legrand's service to the club has been nothing short of remarkable.

He was presented with a small trophy to mark the event after today's match against Malory - Legrand's 205th game as coach. He coached his first Docklands match on 8th October 1994 (Docklands' first ever match as Crofton), starting with a win against his old club Essex Estonians.

The research has also calculated how many appearances have been made by all the club's players. The top ten all time appearances are:

1 Ned Groy 176

2 Andy Vincett 170

3 Andy Hopper 163

4 Mike Lams 156

5 Danny Primus 120

6 Andy Omoshebi 104

7 Alexis Blair 93

= Sean Marshman 93

9 Keith Lams 77

= Martin Blake 77

Docklands' build-up disrupted

25/10/04 - London Docklands' build-up to the biggest match of the season so far has been disrupted by more problems with the floor at Bacon's College. Docklands face Malory next Saturday at the West London Institture, Osterley, in what promises to be a titantic battle of the current leaders of the division. However, Docklands' first training session of the week had to be cancelled at short notice due to a warped floor caused by weather conditions over the weekend.

The College hope to have the problem solved on Tuesday. However, the University of London volleyball team have very kindly given up their Friday night session to allow Docklands more time to prepare. Docklands also face Harriers on Sunday at Bacon's College.

Click here for a fully updated training schedule.

Meanwhile, one of Docklands' main title rivals suffered a shock defeat at the weekend. Warwick Riga had started the season hopeful of improving on their second place last term but have now lost twice in eight days to Malory and then to Sheffield last Sunday. Also, on Saturday they had to come back from two sets down to beat Newcastle Staffs. The updated table is can be found here.

KO Cup draw confirmed

11/10/04 - London Docklands' campaign to regain the crown of KO Cup champions will begin on November 13th away to Ashcombe. The team from Surrey were convincing winners over East Hants in their first round clash last weekend. Ashcombe play in Division 3 (East) and had lost their opening two league games of the season before beating bottom of the table East Hants 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-18).

This means that Docklands' route to the final is as follows:

Round 2: v Ashcombe (Away)

Round 3: v Cambridge 1 or Danes (Home)

Quarter Final: v TH Lynx/City of Bristol 1/Newcastle Staffs/Birmingham (Away)

Semi Final: v a number of teams including Warwick Riga, Swiss Cottage and London Polonia YMCA. It will be played at Loughborough University.

Final: v a team from the other half of the draw which includes Guildford International, Aquila Lynx, Brentwood Estonians, City of Bristol 2, Sheffield, London Lionhearts and London Malory. The final will also be held at Loughborough University.

Season preview

16/09/04 - Docklands have completed their pre-season preparations ahead of their first match of the season against London Polonia YMCA. After a pre-season training period that saw 13 new players try out, Docklands can now confirm six new signings. They are:

Aaron Stolberg - originally played for Docklands in the 1996/97 season and after many wilderness years he returned to the Docklands team in last year's successful Premier League campaign. At 32 Stolberg is looking to gain some indoor honours to add to his many beach trophies which include the current title of King of the Beach.

Steve Jump - began training with Docklands last season while still playing for Cambridge in Division 2. A formidable middle blocker, the aptly named Jump is looking to challenge established Docklands stars Blake and Halatchev.

Vaclav Petricek - another summer transfer from Cambridge, Petricek, starred in their championship winning season last year and is hoping to add a Division 1 title medal to his collection. He was voted the joint best player in Division 2 last season.

Mark Burns - our second new Australian signing brings us perilously close to our quota of Southern Hemisphere players. Burns will provide coach Ian Legrand with another option in the middle. Away from volleyball Burns is a Radiation Therapist.

Modestas Strockis - the 20 year old setter has quickly settled into the Docklands squad since arriving in the summer. Strockis is over from Lithuania and is studying in London for up to two years.

Flavio - arrived just after the registration deadline last February and was restricted to just training with Docklands. In the true tradition of Brazilian sportsmen he is known simply as Flavio.

Meanwhile, Alexis Blair is preparing for a different challenge. Blair is currently taking a break from volleyball after knee surgery last year and in his spare time he has decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. He departs straight after Docklands' first game this Saturday against London Polonia YMCA. Be sure to be there to cheer Docklands on and wish Blair luck on his latest expedition.

Docklands' first match is at Bacon's College. The warm-up starts at 2.00pm.

Lams on the move

08/09/04 - Following his third retirement from volleyball, Docklands legend Mike Lams is making a move up the career ladder with a lucrative move to Yahoo.com.

The move, reported in Marketing magazine this week (left), sees Lams become head of sales (Europe). After being head-hunted for the first time in his life, Mike said, "This is a great opportunity for me after some great times at Eurosport. I will miss hanging out at the snow boarding events but I am looking forward to some good jollies around Europe."

Everyone at Docklands wishes him well in his new role and will be hoping to get some new warm-up shirts out of Mike's move.

Bacon's College available again

19/08/04 - The floor at Bacon's College has now been fixed and Docklands can finally start their training back at fortress Bacon. The schedule over the next three weeks is as follows:

Glitz given a grand send off

11/08/04 - Albrecht Glitz had a farewell evening last night before heading off next week to the Olympics (to watch) and then over to Berkeley in the US for a year of study towards his PhD. Docklands players and staff were joined by a number of England internationals as one of the most popular players in the English volleyball community was given a grand send off.

Albrecht in a slightly more sober moment
An emotional Glitz said "It is great to see so many of my friends. I will miss them all but I will be back very soon.". The night finally got the better of Glitz as he decorated the pavement in magnificent technicolour. Docklands will miss his undoubted talent and leadership but coach Ian Legrand is already looking to boost his squad with some new signings. More details soon.
Start of training delayed

29/07/04 - The start of Docklands' pre-season training programme has been delayed. A problem with the floor at Bacon's College means that regular training cannot start until Monday 9th August.

There is an extra session provisionally booked at a different venue on Tuesday 3rd August. Any queries should be directed to Andy Hopper on 07703 417 894 or a.hopper@mgn.co.uk.

Aspect Capital renew sponsorship

08/07/04 - London Docklands were given a massive boost today with the news that Aspect Capital have agreed to renew their sponsorship of the club.

This is the third year in a row that the fund management company has supported Docklands. This season the majority of the sponsorship will be used to fund the team's pre-season trip to northern Europe where they plan to take on some top European sides ahead of the domestic season.

Pre-season schedule announced

05/07/04 - London Docklands' pre-season schedule is now confirmed. The team will start training again on Monday 2nd August. Docklands' preparations will start about four weeks before most of the rest of division 1.

Docklands' first league game is on Saturday 18th September against Polonia Ealing at Bacon's College. They then face Aquila Lynx away on the following weekend. Docklands' first clash with main rivals London Malory will be on 30th October in west London.

The full list of fixtures can be found here.

New arrival for Lams household
16/04/04 - Nicole and Mike Lams are today recovering after the arrival of Thomas Lams at 5.52am this morning.

He weighed in at a healthy 9lbs (for our European friends that's just over 4kg).

Although it took a while, Thomas and Nicole are "doing fine".

Vincett makes England squad

13/04/04 - Docklands setter Andy Vincett has been selected in the England squad that will travel to Norway for two friendly matches on 24/25th April. The same set of players then take part in the 43rd Spring Cup in Tallinn (Estonia) between 29th April and 5th May.

England will take on Latvia and Austria in the group stages and play three further matches in the play-offs.

Vincett will be joined in Norway and Estonia by his Docklands colleagues Ian Legrand (Head Coach) and Andy Hopper (Team Manager).

Full squad: Stephen Roper (Donitas, Netherlands, Danny Weemes (Holte IF, Denmark), Andy Vincett (London Docklands), Mark Brown, Steve Fee, Alex Bialokoz (all London Malory), Andrzej Saller, Michas Saller (both Polonia Ealing), Tom Stevens, Andy Sinclair, Efe Eruero, (all Sheffield), Alex Porter (Vingåker, Sweden).

Cappellini to return?

23/03/04 - There are strong rumours that Docklands' star Italian middle hitter Patrick Cappellini could make a return to the club next season. He is currently in contract negotiations but coach Ian Legrand said, "We are confident of securing Cappellini's services again. He would be a great acquisition for our squad."

Cappellini, 28, made an immediate impression in Docklands' first season back in Division 1 (2001/02) but had to return to Italy after only one season. During his time in London he topped-up his earnings by doing some hairdressing on the side.

Premier Champions

21/03/04 - London Docklands have been crowned the new Premier League champions. In the final round at Windsor two emphatic victories against Warwick Riga and London Malory meant Docklands took the league with a 5-1 win ratio.

The Premier League was run as a test event behind closed doors for two years and this season was its first "public appearance". Docklands' fourth victory over Malory this season was the icing on the cake. However, this Saturday's NVL championship decider is the most crucial game in the club's history and Docklands will need to produce an even better performance to secure their first ever NVL Division 1 title.

Riga beat Malory

13/03/04 - Warwick Riga's first ever win over Malory has helped Docklands as they strive to win their first ever Division 1 title.

The stunning five sets victory means that all three teams at the top of the table have lost twice this season. As Docklands have scored more sets than Riga, any sort of win against Malory will see Docklands crowned champions. As long as Riga beat Polonia they are guaranteed second place meaning the loser of the Docklands/Malory game will finish third.

Make sure you don't miss the most exciting finish to the Men's Division 1 championship by coming to support Docklands on Saturday 27th March at Bacon's College (2.00pm warm-up).

Kaptein early shocker

13/02/04 LDV was rocked last night when power hitter Jesse Kaptein turned up at training 15 minutes earlier than normal at 8.45pm. Witnesses were taken aback by his appearance. Their shock was greater since training was scheduled to start at the later then normal time of 9.00pm.

Meanwhile on the same night, stand-in coach Andy Hopper was viciously attacked by a volleyball post. Police are seeking eye witnesses but thankfully x-rays showed there to be no broken bones.

Cup quarter final to take place at Bacon's College

30/01/04 Docklands will continue the defence of their KO Cup crown in familiar surroundings. Their "away" clash against Aquila Lynx is set to take place at Bacon's College after Aquila's usual venue was already booked.

The warm-up starts at 1.00pm on Saturday 7th February. The winner will play either Malory or Swiss Cottage A in the semi final.
